Great Teachings of Guru Nanak – Must Learn
Guru Nanak was the founder of Sikhism also the First of Ten Sikh Guru’s. He was Born on April 15th 1469 to Parents Mehta Kalu & Mata Tripta.
He was the Godly Person & teachings of Guru Nanak are understood to be practiced in three ways:
- Vaṇḍ Chakkō: Sharing with others, helping those with less who are in need
- Kirat Karō: Earning/making a living honestly, without exploitation or fraud
- Naam Japna: Meditating on God’s name to control the five weaknesses of the human personality.
Great Teachings of Guru Nanak
Few Teachings of Guru Nanak that I learned from the writings of Roopinder Singh in his book Guru Nanak : His Life & Teachings which I would to share with you all about Godly Wisdom.
Guru Nanak When He lay down to rest at Mecca…
At Mecca, Guru Nanak lay down to rest. He fell asleep and at some point, his feet happened to point in the direction of the Kaaba. A Qazi admonished Guru Nanak: “Who is this sleeping infidel? Why have you, O sinner, turned your feet towards God?” he said. To this Guru Nanak retorted: “Turn my feet in the direction where God is not.“
Lesson which we all must learn from above incident is that, We shall not find the God & spiritual powers at particular places or temples or with priests because God is everywhere not in just mere or particular location.
As that Qazi admonished Guru Nanak by saying, “Why have you, O sinner, turned your feet towards God?” like how can one determine that God is only available at the particular direction or location? To this Guru Nanak retorted, “Turn my feet in the direction where God is not.”
Guru Nanak on Caste, Division & Discrimination…
In many communities & society there is always Discrimination & Division of Human Beings of that particular community or society to which they call different castes.
Guru Nanak came out strongly against all artificially created divisions and all discrimination, both in word and deed. “The caste of a person is what he does,” he maintained and set out to dissolve differences through the institutions of sangat and pangat.
Guru Nanak on Being Religious…
“Religion consists not of mere words. He who looks upon all men as equal is religious,” says Guru Nank.
“This God was not to be found in remote temples or far away places. He is immanent, thus found everywhere.”
Guru Nanak on established customs that had become mere rituals…
This incident took place when Guru Nanak during his Udasi’s went to Haridwar, India
It is said that he stood at a spot considered sacred on the banks of the Ganges and started offering water with cupped hands towards the west. When pilgrims, who were ritualistically throwing water to the east, curiously asked him why he was doing it in the opposite direction, Guru Nanak replied that he was throwing water towards his farm in Punjab, which needed to be irrigated. “But how can you expect the water to reach so far?” they asked. The Guru said to them: “If you are throwing water towards the east, expecting that it would reach your forefathers’ spirits somewhere in heaven, surely my farm is nearer than where the forefather are.“
Such Incidents made people to rethink about the established customs that had become mere rituals and formed the core of religious practiced in those days.
